Clontarf GAA Club Notes 28th June 2010
The high-flying Senior footballers play Clann Mhuire away tomorrow evening. All support welcome. The Senior Ladies play Foxrock Cabinteely away tomorrow at 7.30pm and all support is welcome too. Best wishes to the Gaelic4Mums who plays St Monicas away tonight (Tuesday 29th) at 7.30pm. Well done to Dublin U16 team who beat Wicklow 6-13 to 1-4 to reach the Leinster Finals on July 17 against Laois. Congratulations to the three Clontarf girls who are in the squad Sarah McCaffrey, Maeve Shannon and Stephanie Adams – see www.dublinladiesgaa.ie for report and pictures. The boys’ U16 hurlers had a superb match against Skerries Harps, and were unlucky to be pipped to the win by a single point. Best performers of the week were the under nines who enjoyed a hat-trick of victories in hurling against Naomh Barrog. Many thanks to Sue Lillis for coaching the mothers in the mums v kids U10 matches on Saturday in St Pauls. Congrats also to the U7 boys who enjoyed their first competive outing in a blitz. We’ve had a great response to the Gaelic 4 Dads social football training, but anyone interested still has a few days to put their name down. The super Seniors' great run continues with two wins - over O'Dwyers and Ballyboden St Endas. The Ladies (Div 1) lost narrowly to Parnells in the cup, while their Div 5 counterparts had a great win over Wanderers. The Under 13 girls are our team of the week, attaining the Division 2 League with eight straight wins. They had a great win on Thursday against St Annes. Well done to Barbara and her team. Well done to all the mentors and teams for the great Mini Leagues final day in blazing sunshine. Thanks to PJ Ryan and his helpers for the food and Denis McIntyre for his wise words. Pictures will be hitting the website this week. Dublin tickets can be collected at the Culdoras bar this Friday 9-10pm. Best wishes to the Gaelic 4 Mothers who have a challenge match against St Monicas on the 29th at 7.15pm. Team of the week are the senior ladies who beat St Brigids (1-9 to 1-4), recording their first win in the Division 1 Cup competition. The Senior men’s next match is on tomorrow t 7.45pm v O’Dwyers in Balbriggan. All support would be greatly appreciated. Congratulation to Under 14 player David McGinn, who won a silver medal for 100m sprint at the Special Olympics last Thursday. Support the U13 girls in their title-deciding league match this Thursday v St Annes at home on Pitch 21. The U10 boys ended the season in style, hosting a nine-team blitz versus three teams each from St Vincents and Raheny in St Anne’s Park. Nursery Mini league finals will take place next Sat from 9.15-10am at the adult pitches beside the Rose Gardens (details on website). The young nursery group the Cubs finished their season on Saturday at the clubhouse. Thanks to Matt O'Neill for his continued hard work.Nursery Mentors Drinks night on Wednesday from 9pm to late – Speaker Gerard O’Connor, Leinster Coaching Director, from 9-45 pm. The club would like to also invite anyone who is interested in helping in the nursery to come along as well. Team of the week are our seniors who staged a stunning comeback to narrowly defeat St Monicas. The Senior Ladies play St Brigids away this Wednesday at 7.30pm. Good Luck to the Dublin U14’s Girls in the All- Ireland Final on Saturday in Roscommon and especially to our two girls, Zoe Murphy and Katie Murray. Best wishes and bring an All-Ireland back to Dublin! Best wishes to all our club members who are currently sitting their Leaving and Junior Certificate exams. The U14 B boys secured a good victory over St Plunketts in the hurling, while the U10 hurlers face a blitz at home this Saturday against St Vincents and Raheny. The Adult teams recorded three impressive wins over the weekend in a super display of skilled and battling hurling and football. The Senior footballers recorded a fine win over neighbours St Vincent’s; the Junior Bs beat Peregrines and the Minor hurlers – the club’s team of the week – made it three in a row, enjoying a brilliant win away to Parnells. Pix of the teams are winging their way to the club website. Come out and support the Senior Ladies, who play Na Fianna at 7.30 tomorrow on Pitch 34. Suppport is also welcome for the U16 Championship game tonight at 7.30 on Pitch 35. Many thanks to former Dublin star Coman Goggins who was kept busy handing out the trophies and awards to our victorious Adult men’s and Ladies teams during Players’ Night last week. The Seniors would like to send on their congratulation to Neil Shanahan, Senior Player of the Year, and Ian O'Dwyer, Young Player of the Year. A good night was had by all. Disappointing loss in U16 Hurling League match to Thomas Davis, while the U14 girls had a great win against Fingallians.Well done to our juvenile hurlers who represented St Brigids of Killester at the half time entertainment in Parnell Park at the Dublin-Kilkenny tie. The 33 boys from the U10s got autographs from their boys in blue heroes after the game on their puckabout, pizza and Parnell Park coach away trip.Adult subs are now due – get them in asap. www.clontarfgaa.com

One of the big events of the club calendar, the Players’ night, takes place at 8.30pm this evening. The fun occasion is open to all, family and friends, with the action taking place downstairs, with food and trad music and the bar open too. Despite a narrow defeat, the Seniors – including many recent additions to the panel – impressed against St Margaret’s in the second league match of the season. Well done to the Minor hurlers, who beat Scoil Ui Chonaill in a thriller. The girls’ teams impressed over the weekend, with the U16 team winning against Ballyboden, the U12 B team enjoying a victory over Man O War, and the U11 Reds impressing again. The U16 boys produced one of their best displays for years, while the under 14s narrowly lost to St Vincent’s. A special mention for the U9 hurlers who did well to run out as winners against Ballyboden. The Culdoras club bar will be open for next Saturday’s Triple Crown decider against Scotland. Treasurer Tom McCabe was this year’s worthy and popular winner of the club person of the year award at the annual dinner dance in Clontarf Castle. County Board Chairman Gerry Harrington presented the beautiful trophy by Damian Duggan. Minor hurlers had a great start to the season with victory over Raheny. Junior B team produced a fine performance to defeat St Colmcille’s in their opening league game. U13A footballers beat Lucan, scoring 1-1 in injury time. Well done to the U12A hurlers who overcame St Sylvester’s. Massive aggregate win for the U11 hurlers – well done. The Senior footballers had a successful encounter with Ballinteer St Johns in the AIB Cup last Thursday, winning by five points. Great win for the U13A boys who secured Division 1 status, winning their fourth grading match on the trot. The U14 girls had a fantastic team-building day in Carlingford last Monday, while the boys’ U12 footballers showed great character and determination to beat St Sylvester’s. The Minors, who play their first league game next Sunday, enjoyed a good win over Finians in a challenge match. The U15 footballers enjoyed a cracking game against St Jude’s which ended in a draw. Team of the week are the U12A hurlers who overhauled a massive deficit to record a great win away at Cuala last Sunday. Tom O Flaherty was superb while Sean O Shea recorded a brilliant four-goal haul. The U11s recorded a big away win in the U11 C FC Group A North tie against Naomh OP/ER. The Under 21 footballers made history, claiming the club’s first ever adult football championship.In a tight derby match with Raheny, they won the B Football Championship at Balgriffin, showing great determination and willingness to battle for every ball. Each and every member of the squad, led by captain Damien Mullins, played their part in this historic day. Both of the U13 football teams showed great character to come from behind, with the A team winning against Naomh Mearnog and the B’s drawing with Ballyboden. Great wins for the U12A footballers and the U11C boys in their respective games. Well done to the U14 girls for kickathon fundraiser for next week’s away trip to Carlingford Adventure Centre. One of the highlights of the club calendar – Chairman’s Night – takes place this Friday, and Clontarf is delighted to have Dublin hurling manager Anthony Daly as guest speaker. Best wishes to John O'Halloran for a speedy recovery following a nasty injury sustained during a challenge match on Friday. Seniors play Naomh Mearnog away next Saturday at 2.30 pm in a promotion play-off. Please support the lads in large numbers for this important fixture. The under-16 footballers started off the season with a great win over Scoil Ui Chonaill, 5-4 to 2-4. It was a great start to the season with a fantastic team performance. First league match is next Saturday. The under-10 hurlers recorded two narrow but comfortable wins over Lucan Sarsfields and Scoil in their astro hurling friendlies. Adult subs are now due. Forms can be dropped in to Trish Reynolds in the club bar tomorrow night from 8-9.30pm. Hurling foundation course is on the astro, starting at 7pm tomorrow week. This course is aimed at Nursery to U11 mentors. The club nursery returns this Satuday, venue to be confirmed later in the week depending on the playability situation at St Paul's. Training is resuming for many teams, so keep all the info coming in over the next few weeks for the notes.

An RTE film crew will be down at the clubhouse astro tomorrow (Wednesday 13th) at 3pm to film Junior A hurler Chris Geoghegan.Chris is the Dublin rep in the All Ireland Talent Show and tomorrow's event is a great showcase for Chris and the club.Please try to attend and spread the word, especially to juvenile players who'll be finished school by then. Any banners/flags and supporters wearing jerseys would be great. Chris himself is visiting Belgrove schools today to help spread the word.the show will go out on January 31st at 6.30pm on RTE1.Mick Bohan session for all mentors is on this Thursday from 8.30-10pm in the club; there will be a practical element on the astro.Foundation course is on Friday night/ Sat morning with Neil O'Driscoll. Times for the course will be 7pm-10pm(approx) Fri night and 9am - 2pm(approx) Sat. It is a dual foundation course so remember to come suitably attired for outdoor practical sessions on both fri & sat, you will be taking part. Best wishes to all members and our teams for the New Year from the executive. Over 40 players of all levels took part in the post-Christmas charity football blitz in aid of the Irish Red Cross flood relief fund. The winning Navy side was captained by Shane Dunlea and included Karl Spelman, Craig McConnell, Ronan Hickey, Vinny Clohisey, Alan Vale and double scorers Siobhan Kennedy and Ciara Fenton. Well done to the hardy souls who braved the icy conditions for the annual Wooden bridge on New Years Day, with all proceeds going to Our Lady’s Children’s hospital.Adult membership subs . www.clontarfgaa.com
