This was a panel of skilled and committed players. Both management and players were confident of their ability to win the Dublin B championship. We struggled to beat St. Olafs on their home ground, in the first round. The missing ingredients, in our preparation, were challenge matches. Some matches were arranged but fell through. We played Whitehall Colmcilles in the quarter final, on pitch 34. The team played skilfully and with great determination, against dogged opposition, some of whose tactics left much to be desired. John O’Connell, at right corner forward, suffered a broken nose in this game. He was unable to take any further part in the championship. The blow escaped the referee’s attention, completely. John didn’t even get a free.
Our semi-final against Craibh Ciarain, again on pitch 34, was disappointing in that we lost by three points. The performance, of about six of our players, wasn’t up to the high standard they had shown in the quarter final. Everybody was very disappointed. The players met and talked about the game and the lessons to be learned from the defeat. This is an excellent bunch of players, who will give great service to Clontarf in the years ahead. It is important to look after them well and to ensure that they play lots of football. The management wish to acknowledge the excellent support they received from the senior manager, Niall Fitzgerald.
