Minor B Championship Final Replay - Fingallians 2-5,Clontarf 1-7
After 130 minutes of exciting, thrilling and sporting football the Minor team suffered the cruel fate of losing by the slenderest of margins, 1 point to a strong Fingallians side in the Minor B Football Championship replay in Garristown last Sunday. As was the case in the drawn game Clontarf lost the toss and played with the elements , wind , sun and hill in the first half and led by six points at the interval , 1-4 to 0-1. The loss of Ciaran Mc Sharry through injury just before half time was a tough blow and despite the seemingly commanding lead Clontarf knew defending it for the second 30 minutes would be a battle. The task was made harder following the concession of 1-2 within 5 minutes of the restart and the six point lead shrunk to just one. The next 25 minutes were end to end stuff with Fingallians pulling ahead only for Clontarf to equalise on two occasions. As the clock ticked down Fingallians went two points up and despite adding a point and fighting hard to the final whistle Clontarf couldn't find the equalising score. This was a brave and skilful performance from the lads who tried hard to the bitter end. Every member of the 24 strong panel played their part in reaching the final and did the club proud throughout the year. This was a tough end to a long season but the progress and improvement in the performance of individuals and the team over the year somewhat makes up for the bitter taste of defeat. Don Palmer, Aidan O Halloran and Mick Cronin will take their leave of this group and under age football after a 10 year stint while Fran Bates will remain as a selector for another season. We look forward to the new season and the fresh challenges and opportunities it will bring for the lads in Adult football or with the Minors of 2009.Many thanks to everyone who turned out in such great numbers to support the lads in both games.[Report from Mick Cronin]
