Ladies Adult League Division 2 – Wed. 21st Oct. 2009

Clontarf 2-5 V Garda 1-5 [ Half Time: 1-4, 0-1 ]

“Garda fail to foil late Clontarf raid ”

Clontarf ladies won promotion to Division 1 football next season when they defeated Garda on Wednesday October 21st on pitch 35. Both teams were already promoted, but Garda came to St Anne's a point ahead, and needed just 1 point to secure league victory. Clontarf pressed forward once the ball was thrown in, and Helen Cliff pointed in the 3rd minute to open the scoring. A well-taken Sarah Murphy goal and point, and 2 points from Chris Doyle put Clontarf into a comfortable wind-assisted lead at half-time, 1-04 to 0-1.

The second half required all the battling qualities of the players. Louise Keogh scored a free for Garda and Cliff added another point in the 4th minute. It was to be Clontarf's last score until the dramatic finish to the game. The backs defended tenaciously, but Garda piled the pressure on, with 2 more pointed frees from Keogh and 1 from Gillian Morris, and then struck a killer blow with a goal in the 28th minute. With a minute left on the clock, the ball was launched unto the Garda square and Miriam Foley met it sweetly to the back of the net, leaving the final score 2-05 to 1-05.

It was a spirited performance all round, with heroes all over the pitch at different stages of the game. Thanks to all the club members for the support on a particularly bad night.
