Feb 5th - Challenge Game

Na Dubhgall 3-5, Clontarf 2-4

The Junior B Footballers may have had the best winter hibernation for some years, having last played on Oct 23rd, but they rolled out on a cold Feb morning to kick off Clontarf's Adult football season with a challenge game against Na Dubhgall of Baldoyle.

Fielding an expeimental side with 9 starters who hadn't played any Junior football in 2005, Clontarf started like a team with the equivalent of an expired NCT Certificate. 2 sloppy first half goals were conceeded as Clontarf stumbled to the half time break a mere 6 points down (2-2, 0-2), not helped of course by a penalty kick hoofed 10 ft high and 2 ft wide by Neil Arthur. Clontarf's only score from play coming from the boot of the big Garda. Yes, never mind the blooming snowdrops or the swelling buds of the elder bushes, one of the sure signs that spring has arrived - Steve Moore kicking points for fun.

Joe Glackin let fly with the half time talk, having no doubt picked up a few tips from Pillar on the box. A re-shuffled team was send out and slowly the ship came round, as Clontarf dominated the 2nd half with 2-3 from Neil Arthur (....still didn't make up for that penalty miss) and another fine point from Steve Moore had Clontarf level with 5 mins to go. Paudie Kelleher was introduced making it a rare father-son combination in the half forward line. The backs were on top with Donal Nolan his usual class act. Beside and in front of him Eoghan Stanley and Conor Glavey were magnificant on their Adult Football debuts. Derek Gallagher's move to half back opened up a big supply line and up front Colm Hickey had a hand in most scores.

While Clontarf did so well to draw level with 5 mins to go, the warning signs were obvious from the sideline. The yellow light had been on for over 10 mins now and there wasn't a drop of juice in the Tarf tank. Na Dubhgall took their late scores well and ran out winners by 4 pts (3-5, 2-4)
