Minor League Div 3 – Sun. April 1st. 2007

Clontarf 3-21 V Na Fianna 1-8  [ Half Time: 1-10, 0-5 ]

“Clontarf on song”

On a perfect day for football the minors put in a terrific display to run out easy winners over Na Fianna at St Anne’s last Sunday morning. The back line from the recent win over Whitehall once again took the field but injuries and holidays resulted in a reshuffled midfield and forward line taking the field with Alan Cooke and Gareth Johnson being asked to form a new midfield pairing and Hugh O Malley starting at corner forward. Na Fianna with the wind in their backs looked impressive in the early minutes and opened the scoring with a point within 60 seconds. Clontarfs back line was being tested but they proved more than able for the task. Defending as a unit they denied the Na Fianna forward line time and space to make use of their possession. As the game settled down the hard working Clontarf midfield began to take control and a supply of quality ball to the forward line led to 7 unanswered points. Kevin Mc Grath operating a full forward was on fire during this spell and caused havoc for the full back during this 15 minutes spell of Clontarf dominance. Points were exchanged as the game ticked down to half time but a “50” from Michael Wintersen found its way to the Na Fianna net and Clontarf ended the half with a commanding lead of 1-10 to 0-5

The second half began like the first with Na Fianna charging from the blocks and reducing the Clontarf lead to 6 points within 5 minutes of the restart. Na Fianna , with their confidence rising were driving forward. A last ditch goal line save from the Clontarf full back John Maguire however turned the game and the resulting sweeping movement down the field put Hugh O Malley through on goal and he clinically finished to the net. Clontarf tacked on points at ease with Na Fianna struggling to make an impact in any area of the field. Tommy O Connor added a third goal late on before Na Fianna broke up field and netted a late consolation score. Back to back wins have got the season off to a flying start but tougher games lie ahead .
