Junior A Football Championship 2nd Rnd Replay – Tue. 9th June 2009

Clontarf 2-11 V Wanderers 1-10  [ Half Time: 1-2, 0-7 ]

“Wonders nevers cease as Wanderers reeled in”

Clontarf advanced to the 1/4 final of the Junior A Championship with a 4pt defeat of Wanderers at sunny St. Annes Pk. This was the 3rd meeting between these teams in a month, following a draw in the Championship and a league win for Wanderers. The home side turned in a superb 2nd half performance to turn a 2 pt deficit into a 4pt win. Man of the match Daragh O'Brien produced a wonderful championship performance. He had a hand in almost all of Clontarf's scores, finishing with a personal tally of 0-6.
Wanderers were the dominant side in an opening half riddled with frees as both sides fought hard to take control. A good start by the visitors was dampened by a Clontarf penalty, converted by Ciaran Johnson after the Wanderers keeper executed a foot block on O'Brien. Wanderers continued to dominate possession and notched 2 more points before O' Brien fired over from 30 yards. The visitors then scored 3 unanswered points, helped in part by some mis-judgements in the Clontarf defence. The unmarked John Traenor fired over Clontarf's final score of the half as Wanderers hit 2 more fine points from distance.
With five minutes of the half remaining the Wanderers corner back picked up a 2nd yellow for a foul on O'Brien. Half time Clontarf 1-2, Wanderers 0-7
On the resumption centre back Redmond O'Leary started the Clontarf rally and he glided 50 yards before finding Steve McMorrow who delivered to O'Brien for Clontarf's opening score of the half. The Clontarf full forward was now unstoppable as he notched the next 4 scores to keep Clontarf in the hunt. Meanwhile Wanderers found the net after 12mins to maintain a 3pt lead. Ciaran Johnson fired over a close range free before O'Brien's fine efforts continued as he cut the margin to just 1 with a great effort off his left, making up for a glorious goal chance fluffed minutes earlier.
With just 10mins remaining Clontarf stepped up their performance all over the pitch and Wanderers had no response. John Moroney made some fine stops in goal as the Clontarf defence refused to yield. Mark Murphy who was having a quiet game tied up the match after good work from McMorrow and Traenor. O'Brien again was the source as he found Feo Dodd unmarked and the half back slotted neatly over to push the home side ahead for the 1st time in the game, much to the delight of the home support. Fergal Lynch edged Clontarf further ahead before sub Steve McGinn found the net to settle the tie. The opportunity for the goal was gifted to Clontarf by the Wanderers goalie who sent a hand pass astray. Dara O'Brien pounced on the ball and instead of taking his point he picked out McGinn who calmly slotted past the goalie. A late Wanderers attack yielded a point to leave the final score Clontarf 2-11, Wanderers 1-10. Next up a 1/4 final clash with St. Vincents.
